We design the control gear and the lithium-ion battery together, for better performance and reliability.
Charging that protects the battery
Charged to 80%
Batteries are only charged up to 80%, to improve their lifetime.
Topped up from 79%
Charging starts again at 79%, so there is no constant trickle charge: low standby power (0.5W) and a low floating charge. This alone can save £27.80 a year per luminaire.
Over-current and deep discharge protection
The charging current is limited, and the battery is protected from over-current charging and deep discharge.
Temperature protection
Keeps the battery away from high and low temperatures.
Light for the full duration, year after year
Constant light output
A constant current driver keeps the light output the same for the whole discharge (more than 3 hours).
Half the capacity is enough
Only 50% of the battery capacity is needed for 3 hours of emergency lighting in year 1.
Battery provision
100% battery provision on 1.5W luminaires, and 50% on 3W luminaires.
Slow ageing
Going from 80% to about 50% capacity should take over 10 years in good operating conditions.
Testing and standby
Accurate battery tests
Pulse discharge control measures the battery voltage (its capacity) after a discharge, and recharges only when needed. With Li-ion the voltage shows exactly how full the battery is, which NiCad can't do.
Ultra-low standby current
About 10µA in sleep mode after a 3 hour discharge, so the battery can last 6 months before a deep discharge if the mains isn't restored.
Designed together
The circuit is designed specifically to charge and protect lithium-ion batteries.
Tested around the clock
In our factory we run batteries 24/7 at three different temperature ranges to check their performance.
